Sperry Tents

One of the best things about Social House is definitely the mix. We have business owners, flexible workers, creative, artists... a total blend in a range of industries. The contrast has shown us that perspective from people doing something different than you are is just as important as getting it from those who do similar work. Another best thing about Social House? Tammy.

I was over the moon when she told us she wanted to take one of our offices. I mean, who wouldn't want Sperry Tents Miami to be 'headquartered' in your community? It quickly became apparent that we weren't just adding a respected business and a beautiful product to our membership, though; we were gaining an amazing person to be around every day. Positive, kind, respectful, fun and real, Tammy is exactly the kind of person you'd hope to be able to choose as a coworker. She's also ridiculously hard working and killing it in her business, proving that you don't have to be a competitive jerk to be successful. There's a reason why Sperry is our exclusive tent provider at the House, and it's not just because they're on site - it's because they're the best to work with, period, and here in South Florida, that's because of Tammy. We grabbed a cup of joe in her cute little office to get the low down on how she got her start in the industry and what she loves most about her work.

What are you drinking?

Black coffee.

Current mood in less than 3 words:

Overly caffeinated.

How did you discover that working in the event industry was what you wanted to do?

I was managing a restaurant in Palm Beach doing events, and I did real estate for a short period of time, which made me realize I wanted to be in the event industry without being a planner. A mutual friend of a former boss was looking to expand his business to South Florida and I was referred to take on the position, so the timing of everything was very serendipitous for a partnership.

How'd you take the leap from passion to full time job?

When the job was first presented to me, it was mentioned that I would be working for a tent company, which I didn't know much about. Once I went to Nantucket, I was able to see the type of events that Sperry produced, and the beauty of the tents transformed my roll into a passion for the product. I have a huge connection with New England, so the fact that they are hand-crafted in Massachusetts where I grew up made it that much more special.

What's your favorite part about your industry/your job?

Getting to help people plan their special day and to see all of the different areas of Florida that I would not have visited without my job. I've experienced so many hidden gems that made me fall in love with Florida all over again.

How has Social House helped you with the way you do business?

It's changed my perception of what owning a business can be. Seeing all of the different entrepreneurs grow their own businesses from passion has allowed me to work harder and encourages me to continue loving what I do. The energy of the people who work at Social House also brightens my mood, in comparison to working in a private office without any social interactions.

Any productivity tips or secrets?

Lists. I love lists, in my personal life and in business.

Any tips for others looking to break into the event industry?

Never give up on yourself, always trust your instincts.

Your ah-ha moment:

Very recently, when I was traveling for 2 months in our other markets of DC and Nantucket, I was on the ferry and had a moment of "I'm where I'm supposed to be, doing what I'm supposed to be doing."

Most rewarding part of your job:

Going to the events when everything is set up. I usually get to see the tents erected, but I don't always get to see the design involved so I love to see it all come together.

Most rewarding part of your week:

I actually really love early mornings before the day has begun, where I can have my coffee with my BFF Buddy (dachshund) and just relax.

What's something that has happened that you never could have planned for or expected?

I have been able to help a handful of friends with tents for their weddings, so being able to see friends and family experience the beauty of Sperry is a very rewarding moment. This allows others to see why I'm so passionate about the product.

What do you wish more people knew about you?

I'm very outdoorsy. I also do manual labor when it comes to setting up tents, if I have a busy week and things need to be moved or trailered - I can do it myself.

Your dream job:

Being an event planner for a winery and having a Sperry tent onsite.

Your favorite piece of work:

My favorite wedding was at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, which was the first year I started with the company. It was a young couple, who ordered our largest tent with a full floor and veranda built out overlooking the lake. It was simply beautiful.
